How to Search Google Safely in 2025

We all turn to Google to find answers fast. But with so much information out there, not all of it is trustworthy. Whether you’re researching competitors, sourcing images, or managing your business listing, it’s important to know how to search safely.

Here are our top tips, updated for 2025, to keep your browsing secure and effective:

Stick to Reputable Sources

Anyone can post online, but not every website deserves your trust. Look out for government (.gov), education (.edu), or well-known business domains. Avoid unfamiliar sites that look outdated, are full of pop-ups, or push you to download something.

Use Google’s Search Tools

Google has fantastic built-in filters to help refine your results. Use the “Tools” button under the search bar to filter by time, region, and so on. This is especially helpful for staying current with industry trends.

Avoid the Clickbait Trap

Search results that promise outrageous claims or sensational headlines often lead to misinformation or malicious sites. If it looks too dramatic or out of place, it probably is.

Check URLs Before Clicking

Hover over links to preview where they’ll take you. Watch out for typos or odd domain endings. Fake sites often mimic real ones (like g00gle.com instead of google.com).

Use Google Safe Browsing Tools

Google’s Safe Browsing site (transparencyreport.google.com) lets you check whether a website has been reported for hosting malware or phishing attempts.

At ITM Digital, we help our clients not only build websites but stay safe while exploring the web. If you’re ever unsure about the source of something you’ve found online, reach out. We’re happy to help.
